9 Mile Creek Ranch

Location:  Minatare, Nebraska
Manager:  Sam Evans

The 9 Mile Creek Ranch, located 16 miles northeast of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, consists of 25,000 acres of native range predominately populated by hard grasses. The ranch lies in the northeast corner of Scottsbluff County just 2 miles east of Lake Minatare. The Schiff family acquired 9 Mile in 2006 as its second ranch in western Nebraska. The 9 Mile Ranch managed take-in cows for its first few years as the Mule Shoe Ranch developed the Schiff cow herd. The ranch, now exclusive to the Schiff cow herd, focuses on the terminal cross bred cows supplying Age Verified calves to the Schiff Snake Creek back-grounding feedlot. Sam Evans, manager of 9 Mile since early 2012, has continued a focus towards late season calving in May to coincide with corn stalk grazing during the winter months with minimal feed supplementation throughout the year. The later calving season advances the goals of least cost production and delivering quality calves in the fall.

The 5 pivots of row corn production on the ranch, established by previous ownership, gave birth to the Schiff’s farming operation in western Nebraska. Although today the farm operation concentrates production 30 miles away, 9 Mile remains a central base for the farming operation and service shop for all the Nebraska operations.
